Why Certify Introduction

On any given day, the Georgia MBDA Business Center fields numerous inquiries from small businesses on a wide array of topics. Consistently, we find certification to be among the top three concerns for business owners, just behind capital and opportunities.

When entrepreneurs inquire about certification, they typically ask the following questions:

  • What types of certifications are out there?
  • Who certifies my business?
  • What is the certification process like?

The good news is that certification is a very useful tool if you leverage it correctly, and certification has helped many of our firms access lucrative opportunities that would have otherwise been unavailable to them.

However, small business owners tend to hold numerous misconceptions about certifying. As such, it is important that you understand exactly how certification fits into your long-term business strategy.

In this series, I will explain the different types of certifications (with an emphasis on government, industry-specific, and owner-designated certifications), their uses, and when you should consider certifying. By the end, you should be able to answer the following questions:

  • What certifications are available to me?
  • Where and how do I certify my business?
  • What can certification do for my business?
  • What should I consider as I look to certify my business?
